RETURN OF THE COLD PUMAS INTERNATIONAL BEER CUP

It’s been a long time, but summer is here and summer is beer. If you need refreshment of the origins of the CPIBC please see the previous post for the first nominee.

Nominee two… TUSKER – Nairobi, KENYA

SMELL: This fellow arrives at the nose with a sweet earthiness, like the smell of burnt treacle. Imagine a million crème brulees crisping beneath nature’s own hot grill as midday breaks on the African plains. Kabang!

TASTE: The result is a thick, heady taste, with a slight spice to it, whilst the earthiness remains from the nose and into the palate with convention, retaining a pachydermal boldness on the tongue as ballsy as the creature it references.

CAFR: Admittedly not overtly or conventionally refreshing, but the depth of the spice makes it somewhat moreish.

LABEL DESCRIPTION: Tusker lager has been brewed in East Africa since 1922. Named after the elephant that killed George Hurst, one of the brewery’s founders, Tusker claims that special heritage of being one of the first beers in East Africa. Over the years, this unique lager has become a part of East Africa’s rich tradition. Tusker is brewed with high quality malt, made from equatorial barley grown at the base of Mt. Kenya, choicest hops and water that springs from the renowned Aberdare mountain ranges. Tusker’s famous crisp, refreshing taste and finest quality has continuously earned Gold Medals in the prestigious International Monde Selection Awards.

BOTTLE DESIGN: Beginning with an art-deco-esque elephant as the logo representing 1920s origins, Tusker retains its colonial beginnings with a sublime and somewhat regal colour scheme aboard a thick brown bottle stating BEER ONLY on the neck. A vintage tour-de-force!

VOLUME & SIZE: 4.2%/500ml

EST: 1922

RATING: 7.0
